Girona is a city in Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region, beside the River Onyar. It’s known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter (Barri Vell) and the Roman remains of the Força Vella fortress. Landscaped gardens line the Passeig Arqueològic, a walkway following the Old Quarter’s medieval walls, which include watchtowers with sweeping views
Girona, was the location of our very first pop up back in 2019 and is back by popular demand. Girona really is a paradise for cyclists and is known as a favourite to many a professional cyclist. The area provides a diverse range of terrain including some epic climbs, coastal routes all wrapped around a wonderfully historic centre.
After settling into the Retreat we have a rolling ride in the Girona countryside, this ride is simply to ensure we have the bikes set up just right for you for the week of cycling ahead.
(with option of Rocacorba climb)
A perfect way to start the week of cycling by taking in the wonderful scenery around Banyoles including the lake with some wonderful rolling quite roads. There is also an option to add a degree of flexibility to the route and to add in one of the most famous climbs of the area Rocacorba made famous by none other than David Millar who lives nearby and often is seen in the local cafes.
Including the most beautiful café stop!
The route skirts around the main centre of Girona before heading out to the fabulous must do climb of Els Angels rumoured to be a favourite of Lance Armstrong back in the day. The climb gently meanders up from Girona with spectacular views at the top where there is the Santuari dels Angels and a café. After the climb we descend down to Monells for lunch in what has to be one of the prettiest centres for a well-deserved lunch stop. The route then comprises of rolling roads back to the retreat.
(with option of a partial or full climb)
This rides heads north to one of longest climbs in the area which offers up some wonderful views the total climb is 18km long with an average gradient of 5%, however there is an option on the route to only take in part of the climb before continuing on to another spectacular lunch stop. After the climb we descend down to a historical village of Besalu for lunch. Make sure you have your camera ready as we cycle across a 12th century bridge which is simply spectacular. . From here we circle back south and pick up some lovely country road and villages before heading back to the retreat.
We head towards the west of Girona to take in some smooth quiet roads as we head out to another famous climb in the area. The route is largely on quite rolling tree lined roads giving you a real sense of riding in the heart of the Catalonia countryside. Sant Hilari Saclam is an epic climb but nothing to be feared given the gradient remains relatively consistent and quite gentle. A great one to get into your rhythm and allow your mind to wander before a simply breath-taking descent before looping back and heading bat east to Girona. A great route and one of our favourites.
It certainly wouldn’t be a Cycle Retreats holiday without a spectacular coastal trip… so here it is. The route takes us out to the southwest on a rolling quite roads. The descent down to the coast is just picture perfect with smooth winding roads with switch backs galore. After the descent down we have lunch on the beech before looping around and eventually picking up the road we headed in on. A great way to round of the week.
