Last Sunday (August 5th) I had the pleasure of participating in Yorkshire Lass CC Sportive 2018, a wonderful event in Thirsk, in aid of Women vs Cancer, which raises money for some very worth charities including PSPA and Carlton Lodge Activity Centre, which was the starting point for the ride.
The Yorkshire Lasses are one of the biggest women’s only cycling clubs in the UK, and this was their third women’s only sportive event. I was joined on the ride by two Cycling Retreats regulars, Gina and Tracey. With 600 riders in attendance, it was a major turnout, and riders had the choices to ride a 30, 60 or 100 mile route. Both experienced and novice riders were made to feel welcome, and the atmosphere was second to none with a real feeling of kinship. The atmosphere was easily the most friendly we have encountered at a Sportive event.
The sportive started the night before at a pasta party with a motivational talk from one of the four mums in a boat that rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in the Talisker challenge. It was absolutely awesome. Music and a glass of wine followed before we all went off early to bed…… but not for all the Yorkshire lasses, who certainly know how to party. The atmosphere at camping site was like being at a festival!
The next day the ride was an early start, and I was glad to be riding the 100 mile route with my fellow ride leader Gina and good friend Lisa. Also in attendance was Tracey, who is a Cycle Retreats host manager, and some members from Warrington Running Club Triathlon team, my home tri club, who were doing the 60 mile ride. All in all, we had a great turn out!
The cyclists village had an array of stalls for people to view and buy goodies at. The food at the event and the cake was second to none.
The ride set off at exactly 7 am, and was a simply breathtaking route through the quiet scenic villages of Yorkshire. After 60 miles the terrain changed and very quickly became hilly with climb after climb relentlessly unfolding before us. The encouragement on the course was fantastic, and the feed stations were superb, with so much food available.
The entire 100 mile route led to over 6,000 feet of climbing and it was enough to test the even most experienced riders. While the girls all peddled hard, the lads worked up a sweat and needed to eat ice cream and cake to help them re-fuel, however they were waiting on the finish line to cheer us all back in!
The route was clearly marked and superbly organised from start to finish. Once back at the village it was like a party atmosphere, with riders chilling out listening to music, eating and drinking. We had the chance to catch up with Cycle Retreats guests who will be new to our events this year and some returning guests, who we are looking forward to seeing once more.
As YLCC Sportive is 100% for charity Cycle Retreats sponsored the event with a prize of an all inclusive holiday to Retreats, we met our winner and cant wait to see them out at Retreats!
From start to finish this sportive was super friendly, well organised and raised significant amounts for charity, with all of the proceeds going to these good causes. We’d like to thank Yorkshire Lasses for all the hard work they put into the making this a very special event.
